Microsoft Brings iPhone File Sharing to Windows PCs

Microsoft’s new wonder is a feature that will enable making file transfer between iPhone and Windows PC easily. It is currently available for Windows Insiders, and with it, all Apple and Microsoft switching users or users are expected to enjoy their travel experience more.

The integration of devices for many of its users can turn out to be frustrating because of its numerous compatibility issues. While all devices from an ecosystem like Apple’s work like magic with each other, Windows has always lagged in such capabilities for iPhone users. This is how the recent update from Microsoft is trying to meet this gap hopefully.

This new feature for file sharing will enable users to share files directly between their iPhones and Windows PCs; it is integrated into the Phone Link app on Windows and the Link to Windows app on iOS.

It also mimics AirDrop but works between devices with different operating systems, thus truly a win-win for the user who relies on both systems. Definitely a significant improvement in cross-platform functionalities as well as user experience.

Requirements for Use

To utilize this new file-sharing feature, users must meet specific requirements:

  • Windows Insider Program: You must be enrolled in the Windows Insider program to access this feature initially.
  • Operating System Compatibility: Your iPhone must run on iOS 16 or higher.
  • App Versions:
    • The Link to Windows app on your iPhone needs to be version 1.24112.73 or higher.
    • The Phone Link app on your Windows PC should be version 1.24112.89.0 or higher.

Once these criteria are met, users can start sharing files easily between their devices.

From iPhone to PC

  1. Open the File: Locate the file you wish to share on your iPhone.
  2. Tap the Share Icon: Select the share icon typically represented by a square with an arrow pointing upwards.
  3. Select Link to Windows: Choose “Link to Windows” from the sharing options.
  4. Choose Your PC: Select your Windows PC from the list of available devices.
  5. Confirm Transfer: The file will begin transferring immediately, and you may receive a notification on your PC when it arrives.

From PC to iPhone

  1. Select the File: On your Windows PC, find and select the file you want to share.
  2. Right-Click and Share: Right-click on the selected file and choose “Share” from the context menu.
  3. Choose My Phone: Select “My Phone” as the sharing option.
  4. Confirm Transfer: Your iPhone will receive a notification indicating that a file has been sent.

This process simplifies what was previously a cumbersome task involving third-party applications or email attachments.

As this feature rolls out beyond the Windows Insider program, it will undoubtedly transform how users interact with their devices, making everyday tasks more efficient and enjoyable.
